Backpacks for Back to School Drive

The Family Service League will hold its annual "Backpacks for Back to School" drive on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, supplying local underprivileged children with backpacks filled with school supplies.

This will take place at the Olsten Family Center on:

■Wednesday, Aug. 25, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
■Thursday, Aug. 26, 1:30 to 7:30 p.m.
■Friday, Aug. 27, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The backpacks are filled with school supplies for the up-coming school year and will be distributed to local low-income families struggling with financial hardship. All of the items were either donated or purchased with funding provided by Bethpage Federal Credit Union, New York Community Bank, Capital One Bank, National Grid, and many other corporations, civic and community groups, and individuals. More than 2,000 children will receive the school supplies they need to begin school prepared, confident, and ready to learn.

Stand Up For The Homeless Clothing & Donation Drive

The County Executive is pleased to announce a clothing and donation drive in preparation for the
3'd Annual "Stand Up for the Homeless" event to be held August 4, 2010. You are encouraged to donate gently used clothing for men, women, and children of all ages and sizes. All donations are
welcome and particular items of need include baby and toddler clothes, children's shoes, socks,
and clothing, as well as winter-appropriate garments for both adults and children.
For your convenience, clothing donation bins will be designated in the following four locations
(you may direct individual location inquiries to the contact listed below for each site):

What is Early Head Start?

Early Head Start is a federally funded community-based early childhood program for income
eligible families. It is designed to promote healthy outcomes for pregnant women, to enhance
the development of very young children, and to foster healthy family functioning respectful of
the uniqueness of each family’s culture and language and the ability of each child.
At the Children’s Community Early Head Start, we believe that parents are a child’s first and
best teachers and that the home is the first and best classroom. With this in mind, our
program is designed to support parents of very young children by offering a variety of child
and family focused options including:
•Home visits by an early childhood educator during pregnancy
•A home-based and a center-based option for infants and toddlers

The Children’s Community Head Start serves low-income families residing in the following school districts:

Free Latino College Fair

The 2009 Latino College Fair will help students and family members learn about finding the right college, getting into college, and paying for college. 60 independent colleges and universities in New York are expected to attend. Students in 12th grade are also eligible to enroll in a $500 scholarship drawing at the opening Paying for College Workshop!

Although registration is not required, it will help us gauge interest and plan for the refreshments we’ll have available at the event.

This event is part of a federal College Access Challenge Grant (CACG) awarded to the cIcu by the New York State Higher Education Services Corp, the state agency designed to administer CACG. Gang Prevention Information

YOUTH GANGS… race, economic status, age, gender and community are not relevant when it comes to your child being recruited into a gang… The Suffolk County Probation Department has posted on its web page valuable information about the identifying characteristics of gangs as well as the warning signs of gang activity. The information is available in both English and Spanish. The department has also developed a Gang Information Hotline (631) 852-5070 and an e-mail address ganginfo@suffolkcountyny.gov, which can be used to seek help or report signs of gang activity. All calls and emails are kept confidential.

There are many warning signs of possible gang involvement; some of them include such things as:
· A change in behavior and personality at home; frequently out late, breaks curfews, rules and laws; secretive about activities, has no respect for you or any authority figures
· A change in behavior at school; truancy, a drop in grades, frequent detention or suspension
· Graffiti, symbols or numeric codes seen on personal property in room, on books, backpacks or inside baseball caps
· Unexplained cash, expensive material items, wearing a lot of jewelry or medallions

Tied in with the warning signs is information identifying the characteristics of gangs. Among them are:
· Colors (only wears one color continuously)
· Beads/Bandannas/Tattoos/Brandings
· Photos of groups of youth throwing hand signs and wearing colors.

“Knowing what to look for is critical, which is why we wanted this information posted on the web page,” said John Desmond, Director of the Suffolk County Department of Probation. Suffolk County’s Gang Suppression Team

In August, Suffolk Executive Steve Levy, District Attorney Thomas Spota and Suffolk Police Commissioner Richard Dormer announced the formation of a special law enforcement unit (Gang Suppression Team) and a comprehensive program to help quell gang violence in the county. Approximately 20 officers currently working out of Suffolk’s police precincts were brought together into a single unit to share intelligence and focus on ‘hot spots’ where gang violence is prevalent.

Since the department’s precinct-assigned gang detectives were formed into a single unit, the Gang Suppression Team has put 52 alleged gang members behind bars, the department said. Those arrested were roughly divided among Long Island’s four most prominent gangs: MS-13, Latin Kings, Bloods and Crips.

“By combining these personnel into a single unit we have created a team that can immediately and visibly make its presence known in hot spots where gang activity is suspected,” Levy said.

Low Cost Spay/Neuter Day October 3, 2009

On Saturday, October 3, 2009, the town and Helping Paw, a not-for-profit organization, are sponsoring a low-cost spaying and neutering mobile clinic in the Huntington Town Hall parking lot at 100 Main St., Huntington, NY 11743.

All surgeries are performed in a spacious fully equipped mobile veterinary clinic. The clinic standards exceed those of The Association of Shelter Veterinarians veterinary medical care guidelines for spay-neuter programs, published in JAVMA in 2008. (74 Vet Med Today: Special Report JAVMA, Vol 233, No. 1, July 1, 2008.

The spaying or neutering cost is $57 for cats and $99 to $300 for dogs, depending on their size. The pets need to be dropped off at the clinic between 8:45 and 9:30 a.m. and will be ready for pickup any time between 1 to 5 p.m., depending on the number of patients received that day. No food should be given to the animals after midnight on Friday, but water should not be withheld.

World Habitat Day October 5th

The United Nations has designated the first Monday each October as
World Habitat Day.

This year on Oct. 5 in Washington, D.C. and around the world, please join Habitat for Humanity in support of this global observance as we come together and declare that the lack of decent, affordable housing is unacceptable.

According to the United Nations, more than 100 million people in the world today are homeless. Millions more face a severe housing problem living without adequate sanitation, with irregular or no electricity supply and without adequate security.

Worldwide, more than 2 million housing units per year are needed for the next 50 years to solve the present worldwide housing crisis. With our global population expanding, however, at the end of those 50 years, there would still be a need for another 1 billion houses. (UN-HABITAT: 2005)

Raising awareness and advocating for change are the first steps toward transforming systems that perpetuate the global plague of poverty housing. World Habitat Day serves as an important reminder that everyone must unite to ensure that everyone has a safe, decent place to call home.

The U.N. further states that both developed and developing countries, cities and towns are increasingly feeling the effects of climate change, resource depletion, food insecurity, population growth and economic instability.

Rapid rates of urbanization cause serious negative consequences - overcrowding, poverty, slums with many poorly equipped to meet the service demands of ever growing urban populations.

With over half of the world’s population currently living in urban areas the U.N. believes there is no doubt that the "urban agenda" will increasingly become a priority for governments, local authorities and their non-governmental partners everywhere.

U.S. Housing Facts

•About 95 million people, one third of the nation, have housing problems including a high-cost burden, overcrowding, poor quality shelter and homelessness. (National Low Income Housing Coalition: 2004)

•One in three American households spend more than 30 percent of income on housing, and one in seven spends more than 50 percent. (Joint Center for Housing Studies: 2006)

•The number of low-income families that lack safe and affordable housing is related to the number of children that suffer from asthma, viral infections, anemia, stunted growth and other health problems. About 21,000 children have stunted growth attributable to the lack of stable housing; 10,000 children between the ages of 4 and 9 are hospitalized for asthma attacks each year because of cockroach infestation at home; and more than 180 children die each year in house fires attributable to faulty electrical heating and electrical equipment. (Sandel, et al: 1999)

Global poverty facts

•By the year 2030, an additional 3 billion people, about 40 percent of the world’s population, will need access to housing. This translates into a demand for 96,150 new affordable units every day and 4,000 every hour. (UN-HABITAT: 2005)

•One out of every three city dwellers – nearly a billion people – lives in a slum. (Slum indicators include: lack of water, lack of sanitation, overcrowding, non-durable structures and insecure tenure.) (UN-HABITAT: 2006)

•UN-Habitat has reported that because of poor living conditions, women living in slums are more likely to contract HIV/AIDS than their rural counterparts, and children in slums are more likely to die from water-borne and respiratory illness. (UN-HABITAT: 2006)

•Housing formation generates non-housing related expenditures that help drive the economy. (Kissick, et al: 2006)

•Investing in housing expands the local tax base. (Kissick, et al: 2006)

Celebrations of World Habitat Day in Washington, D.C. will be an excellent opportunity to foster global discussion and raise the profile of shelter and urban issues at the national and international level. Events in the United States and around the world include policy forums, award presentations, luncheons, dinners, house-building and exhibitions.

CVS, Walgreens To Offer Free Flu Shots To Unemployed

CVS and Walgreens, the nation's two largest drugstore chains, will soon offer millions of dollars of free seasonal flu shots to unemployed and uninsured people. Job seekers are among the least likely to get flu shots, with 34 percent of them receiving shots last year, compared with 49 percent of the overall population, according to a CVS study. CVS and Walgreens will make seasonal flu shots available to all consumers starting today. CVS spokesman Mike DeAngelis said Monday that "not all but most of the Long Island stores" will have the flu shot clinics. He said there are about 120 stores on Long Island. Free Drug Discount Card Offered by NYS

New York State Working with Pharmacies and Manufacturers to Lower Drug Costs

New York State recently introduced the New York Prescription Saver (NYPS), a free prescription discount card that can help save on the cost of prescription drugs, including insulin, needles and insulin syringes. The card is for New York State residents who are 50 to 64 years of age or persons with a disability regardless of age. Income eligibility limits are up to $35,000 single and $50,000 married. However, if there is a substantial income drop residents may report their current year gross income. Those with Medicaid coverage are not eligible.

The NYPS card can lower the cost of prescriptions by as much as 60 percent on generics and 30 percent on brand name drugs. When the card is presented, the price will be reduced by a cash discount right at the pharmacy counter. Most outpatient prescription drugs are eligible for a discount. New York State is sponsoring the program with the support of a statewide network of over 3,900 pharmacies that are generously providing these discounts. Many pharmaceutical manufacturers are also participating and providing additional discounts.

Individuals must meet the income requirements and use the card at participating pharmacies. Applicants can apply online at http://nyprescriptionsaver.fhsc.com/, download a NYPS application from the website and mail it in, or call the toll-free Helpline at 1-800-788-6917. The discount card will be mailed to members within two weeks after the application is approved. Participating pharmacies and the discounted prices for drugs can be found on the website.

Arte Latino Mills Pond House Art Gallery

Latino artists take center stage in Arte Latino at the Mills Pond House Gallery, August 22 – September 23, 2009. Viewers will experience unique views of Latino artistic expression that reflect the diversity of the Latino community in the United States. The exhibit includes twenty-one artists who draw their inspriration from a broad range of themes, from immigration to politics, cultural assimilation and family values. The artists hail from California, Texas, Ohio, Missouri, Michigan, Kentucky, Maine, New Jersey and New York. Five Long Island artists are represented. The work presents a snapshot of the rich customs and traditions that their cultures (Cuba, Puerto Rico, Panama, Mexico, Dominican Republic, Ecuador and Spain) have woven into their American lives.

The exhibition opening reception will be held on Saturday, August 22 from 4:30 – 6:30p.m. and will be followed by a special presentation by Sol y Sombra Spanish Dance Company at 7:00p.m. Public is invited to the opening reception to view the exhibition and meet the exhibiting artists. Girl Scouts of Suffolk County operates two beautiful summer camps where children experience a summer full of fun, friendship and excitement that they will remember for a lifetime!
Both of our camps are accredited by the American Camping Association (ACA).

Camp Edey is a 95-acre natural preserve on a chain of freshwater lakes. It is a day camp for girls entering first grade thru ninth and features swimming, boating, fishing, arts and crafts, talent shows, nature activities and more.

Camp Sobaco is a 42-acre stretch of pine barrens on the Carmans River. It is a coed camp for children entering grades first thru sixth. It offers a variety of activities including swimming, arts and crafts, basketball, camping skills/outdoor living, hiking and horseback riding.

Both camps operate in accordance with high standards of Girl Scouts of the USA, New York State health laws and Suffolk County health regulations. Announcing Changes to the HOPE for Homeowners Program

On May 20, 2009, President Obama signed into law the Helping Families Save Their Homes Act. This act modifies the HOPE for Homeowners Program with the goal of helping additional families avoid mortgage foreclosure. It is anticipated that guidance related to these changes will be released within 30 days. The statutory changes to the program include:

• Additional compensation for primary and subordinate lien holders.

• Establishing incentive payments to servicers of loans refinanced under the HOPE for Homeowners Program, as well as originators of new HOPE for Homeowners mortgages.

• Reducing costs of the program to the consumer.

Separation/Divorce Group for Elementary-Aged Children

GED Programs Available to Huntington Residents

Huntington School District residents without a high school diploma can consider participation in several programs that hold the possibility of obtaining a general equivalency diploma.

Huntington's adult education program offers residents free GED classes two evenings per week at Huntington High School. Individuals can also enroll in ESL classes through adult ed if their primary goal is to lean English.

This Spring, the free GED classes are being offered on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6:30-9:30 PM. Participants receive assistance in reading, math, and general basic skills and are also provided with career information. The course prepares residents to take the state GED exam.
